The Real Reason Your Venue Audio Fails (It's Not the Brand)
Three weeks ago, a fitness center owner told me their group-class sound system started crackling. Not in a quiet afternoon slot. Right in the middle of the 6:00 AM peak class. The one with forty members and zero patience for technical issues.
The vendor said the speakers were "past their useful life." The owner said, "We paid $4,100 for this system fourteen months ago."
I asked what specs they had reviewed before signing off. There was a pause.
That pause is the problem.

What a Spec Sheet Really Tells You
Here's what usually happens. A facility manager decides they need new audio. They call three vendors. They compare wattage, frequency range, and price. They pick the one that looks best on paper. Done.
But here's what that process misses: two speakers can claim "frequency response: 50Hz–20kHz" and behave completely differently in practice. One is measured at ±3dB tolerance. The other has no tolerance defined—which means the "50Hz" figure might be rolling off at −10dB before the volume even goes up.
From the outside, it looks like a knowledgeable buyer compared apples to apples. The reality is a spec sheet without test methodology is a marketing document. It's designed to sell. Not to inform.
The two numbers I check first on any speaker:
- Continuous power handling, not peak. A "500W peak" speaker might only sustain 150W continuously. Push an amp past that number and you'll hear distortion long before failure. Most buyers never find out which number they were quoted.
- Tolerance on the frequency response. ±3dB tells me the speaker is predictable across its range. ±6dB means the output can swing enough to change the character of the sound entirely. One is a tool. The other is a suggestion.

The inversion is striking. A kettlebell performs the same in a humid studio or a dry one. A speaker absolutely does not. And members will notice the speaker's breakdown much faster than they'll notice anything about a kettlebell's grip.
The "all speakers are basically the same" idea comes from an era when audio manufacturing was more standardized and fewer overseas factories meant fewer hidden variables. That world no longer exists. What Consumer Audio Debates Get Wrong

- Can I see the quality audit from your last production run? The numbers. Not the brochure.
- What does your warranty actually cover? Prorated after year one? Environmental damage excluded? Full-unit replacement or remote "repair"?
A brand that can't answer these will still take your money. A brand that can will often quote higher. The difference between those two numbers is the cost of certainty.
And it's the cheapest line item on the invoice.
As for the fitness center where the 6 AM class lost audio? They're now on a verification plan—annual audits of every speaker, amp, and cable run. The first audit took two hours and found two loose connections, one overheating amplifier fan, and a Bluetooth receiver sharing a channel with the venue's Wi-Fi. All fixed in one visit.
