Cheap Audio Is Expensive: A Harman Buyer's TCO Story

The Bottom Line

Here's the thing: I don't expect everyone to stop comparing prices. Budgets are real. But we need to stop pretending unit price equals cost.

The $85 speaker is more expensive than the $245 speaker. The "cheap" receiver costs more than the Harman Kardon stereo receiver. And the outdoor Bluetooth speaker system that looked like a bargain was the biggest waste of money in the whole saga.

From the outside, it looks like buying audio is about finding the best price. The reality: it's about understanding what the gear has to withstand, what failure costs, and what the full chain can deliver.

When I took over purchasing in 2020, I thought the goal was to spend less. It took five years and roughly five thousand dollars to learn the goal is to waste less. There's a difference. There's something satisfying about a system that just works—no calls, no tickets, no "it's making a weird noise again" emails.
